This week, I learned about the Dimmer Switch.
This is when you go from moving fast to moving slow. The brain slows down, moving from beta brain waves (busy) to theta (dreamy). This is where we Rest and Digest, calm down, and let the brain be still for long enough that it sends signals of safety to the body. Then, we can regenerate our cells and take a very light nap. Lots of yawning! Where one goes in Theta state is vague, but they say that you know that you’ve been there when you don’t know where you went, but you know you’ve come back.
Of course, this Dimmer Switch is a tricky one to locate. We move fast fast fast and often that is fun! And then exhausting. What exists in between?
In my own life, I find it in funny places. On planes, in turbulence (I’m not kidding. Womblike!). Zoning out in benevolent public spaces (very Stoned at the Nail Salon! But without THC.) In places of designed care, like acupuncture and cupping.
Where does one find the Dimmer Switch for free? I’ve realized it is likely in bed. Optimal dimming opportunities occur in random, un-rushed repose. Not sleep, but rest.
I’ve been on a bit of an apartment journey for awhile now (if anyone knows of anywhere very charming for me to live, let me know) and am constantly researching living spaces, looking at The Market. I’m lucky to be in no terrible rush, so this is mostly fun for me. I love imagining living in different places, mapping where I’d spend my time, wondering about the days I’ve have there. Then, I get overwhelmed! By logistics and possibility and all the moving things that happen and have to happen. When I find the right place, I’ll know.
When this cycle presents, I have found peace in design. I’ll literally google something like “deco vintage bedroom” and voilà: a good-looking bedroom immediately soothes me.
Anyway, we take what we can get in this life and sometimes aesthetic imagination can bring great calm to the system. After searching near and far, here are beds where I think I could find the Dimmer Switch.
ok thanks for reading! see you next week! love ya! <3
